DISEASED SHEEP

SMITHFIELD ALARMED

United Service.

LONDON, 12th January.

The "Weekly Dispatch "-asserts that Snuthfield is seriously disturbed at tho progress of an almost world-wide disease among sheep, which is affecting meat imported into Britain. Great quantities of. Australian \ and South. American' mutton weroi condemned. Smithiield's system of inspection has been altered to combat t the menace. Every carcass of mutton and lamb from Australia and South America is individually inspected. New Zoaland is exempt from the special examinations. The disease occurs in the lymphatic' glands and is deep-seated in tho shoulders. '

Mr. Will Thome, M.P., is raising tha question in the Houso of Commons, and says that he is dissatisfied with the inspection in the countries of origin, as it is insufficiently rigorous. The danger seems to be glossed over. The disease menaces health, particularly., in tho. poror districts, where diseased meat in too frequently brazenly exposed. Tlio origin of the disease, which is not tubercular, is believed to lie in the soil.
