Atmore, Minister of Education, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr. W. J. Deavoll), and Messrs. T. B. Strong, Director ' of , Education, ' and B. .Savage, Departmental Architect, arrived in Nelson this.morning. During, his visit'the Minister will confer with the-.chairman and members of the Nelson' College Board regarding the erection of hostel accommodation at the Boys' College,'and he will also look into the question of the acquisition <}f a- new school site in the wood. In addition a number of appointments of a private, nature have been fixed. Mr. Atmore will return to Wellington to-morrow evening.

During the. Wajinea County Council meeting two mysterious.packages-were brought in. and. laid on the table in, front .of the chairman. :: Accompanying them was-a note from Mr. Phillip BeSt, ex-chairman ?of the, council,' wishing: members of .'the /.council and. the staff a happy ncw^yeai'i. One of the packages was of familiar contour, arid was found tp contain/abottleof wine. The other contained a huge "slice of ''my seventy-eighth birthday cake;"'.; All present reciprocated Mr."Best's good wishes and drank his health... ' -.- ■'■•

The Nelson fruitgrowers were^ most cordially received ■ and entertained by, the Wairarapa association. , The ■ trip has been a great success, with most cordial receptions everywhere. Mr. Tabe's cherry orchard,, and; Mr. Kidd'S Bop and .small fruit, plantations interested the party greatly. The party stayed at Dannevirke overnight, and proceeded to Hastings on Wednesday morning. where they were met by the.Hastinga federation director ; and representative growers, and were entertained and shown through the principal /orchards". A reception is being held, to-night by; the local association. "■'■ The party/proceeds to Napier on Friday, where they;will be entertained by the Thirty Thousand Club, returning to Wellington via,, Palmerston North. They will be guests of the Wellington Fruit Brokers', Association, .and later of /General Motors at the Petono works.- .:''..;■ .:-■. ...'•;:
