ATHLETICS

BY "BPRINTE.H" ROUND ABOUT PLEASANT LITTLE TOUR JENKINS AND GANE DO WELL Two members of the Wellngton Club, C. H. Jenkins and M. Gane, havo had a very enjoyable tour, during which they competed at a couple of meetings in Hawkes Bay and one at Oarterton on Tuesday evening. Both performed with distinction at ail three gatherings, and, although called upon to concede big handicaps, met with a good measure of success. : - The first .meeting attended was the Hastings Club's electric light fixture on 2nd January, and at this .gathering the pair ■ inado. a bright showing. Gane was in splendid form in the cycle races. Biding from scratch in. all events, he pedalled brilliantly, winning the mile and two'miles events in thrilling style, being accorded, great ovations from the. largo crowd. Unfortunately he fell in the other event in which he started, the. half-mile, coming down when entering the straight. Jenkins was the centro of.. attraction .in the sprint events, in'which'another visiting competitor, was,.C. Maitland, of Wanganui. Jenkins was second in his heat of the 100 yards, which, was, won by J. Stephens (12 yai'ds) in lOsec, and third in | .the-final,-run-in similar time. With.a start of 8 yards, Maitland beat Jenkins-, to .the tape in the furlong handicap... Besides the : appearance :of the two Wellington cracks and Maitland, another feature 1 of the ..meeting was the representative fields in the ladies' events, the competitors including Misses G-. and 8.. Jackson, of Wairarapa, Miss J. Greagor;of Wanganui, and Miss V. I Dohertyi of Napier, An invitation 1100 yards scratch race was put on, and this was'won by Miss Greagor, who defeated Miss'Doherty -by a.yard and a ihalf in y 2-ssec. ,• -„ ■.--.• On. .51;,.". January,.-Jenkins- and Gane , added interest; to -the Napier Amateur '■'Athletic and Cycling Club's meeting, which, was held in the afternoon at M f Lean Park. Here the track was in good, condition, and a fairly strong | breeze was : in the competitors' favour. Gane won.the. half-inile',.and one mile cycle handicaps,'but found the handi--caps accorded the other, competitors in the two 1 miles event too liberal to enable "him to be up with the field at the finish. ■ . •A • Napier writer, commented on Gane's performances as follow: — "In all his races the most striking-part of his performance, was his ability to command a good: position in the field without losing any. ground hi bis attempt to do'so. In every case-. when the time came for him to cut through the other, riders to . take the lead lie did so in an excellent manner." In the sprint events Jenkins again-conced-ed big handicaps. , He was not. able to .obtain, first placeiin either of-the two events: in which, he started, ;but -finished up the -day with -two records j to his credit,'"' and, incidentally. „ provided a thrilling finish to the 220 yards handicap. ■ ■■ ■ ■ . At the Carterton Club's meeting on Tuesday night the pair maintained their form, Jenkins running well in the sprints and Gave showing up splendid-, ly in the.cycle events.: . Gane elected to forego his handicaps and ride off 'scratch with:-Tom Oakley. ' In the one mile- he defeated Oakley by half a wheel, but the Masterton crack reversed matters in the one and a half miles event, finishing a length ahead of .Gane^nd ,i#ing..third place. In the-final issue-^ver two miles, untoriiinately, Gane and Oakley crashed fairly.- Jenkins won the 100' yards liandie.ap in great style in 10 l-sscc,--and.w.as second in the furlong event. To-night's Meeting. ; ■ 'A'fine eveniug and a good track, and: :'tliere>should be some sparkling sport at the inter-club fix--turc a'f-'the Basin.Beserve to-night. The: .entries;, are good, both clubs being well and strongly represented in; all sections e£« the. sport. ■ .One of the-interesting features of tup meeting-no" doubt will be the ladies' racesj-. in;^leh;;-Resides the Wanganui 'and Wellington 4 .representatives, there will be co'ihpetitb'rs from othex parts of the Nor'tK-Island, .; One of-these -will.bo' ■Miss-.M^Sarro\^;: avsixtecn-year-old Fox:tpn"girl,";;wlio.causeclisbme\yhat of a slir in athleticVcircles,-in;;tlie'-Slanawatu tho. other;.; oveniug, .■when,'-barefooted, she. put ;upf !:good ; ;perf'6rmanees;'against ex-, perienced'runners;: 'It'was.lier first ap,peai:.ahce..'at ait organised:sports gather-; ing,, and 'the; Manawatu,. officials are enthusiastic- about her.vprospects. General Notes. ', ? ■ ' Some very fine wero credited to an American.:■ high school girl, D. Henders, at a meeting in the States last'month;.. She - was first in the high jump with a mark of 4f t ; 7in, first in the broad jump with a leap of 16ft 9in, first in the 50yds'dash, time 6 2-ssec, and" first in the lOOyd's in llsee dead, which beats the best time over i made byE. Cartwright, of Eureka, and i HelenyFilkey, of Chicago, recognised as two of the outstanding girl athletes in America. It is stated, however, that Miss.HendersVtime probably will not Ibe recognised; as; official. : It is reported-that C. J. Lane, who \yas in Wellington with the Victorian | team for ; the"Australian and Now ZeaI laud championship meeting in Deeein!;bor, i: 1927, has decided not to take up. I running again. His retirement will be a- loss to the sport. Since transferring from Dunediu to Auckland, C. M. Olsen, second to C. Stuart (N.S.W.) in the half-mile at the Australian and Now Zealand championship meeting in 1927, has not found op-portunities-for training easy to obtain. He Hyas in .Bunedin over the holidays, :.and' he stated'then that ho intended undergoing, a month's special preparation"' .-i o.r>, the Auckland championship j meeting,' at which he will probably compete in •.. the v 440 yds and 880 yds titlo ■ events. .1 ; 'No' indication, has'been given as to the strength of the Auckland team to compete for Dominion championship honours, but provided sufficient funds can be raised there is every indication that a strong team will be sent away, says the Auckland "Herald." Success at the ' championship meeting—by no means unlikely—would give a splendid opportunity for the revival of public interest in athletics in Auckland. J. W. Savidan, A. J. Elliott, T. E. Henry, and possibly J. "W. Shirley, have outstanding claims for . consideration, and all are likely to win distinction in their respective events.
