CROQUET NOTES

(By "Peg.;-). ■•■ ;. ■:;■'.! Interelub matches are well in hand again, as quite a number of. the unfinished; and postponed games were com- ' .pleted on Tuesday', 1 and' "the usual Thursday programme, kept. ' .The weather, though threatening-on. eacb day, fortunately kept fine, but players found the blustery wind very;trying.-.Playing a postponed interelub game- at Kelbum, Mesdames Ayson aiid Leightori (Hutt) had the -unique experience of gaining more than half their points by peeling. One of their balls was. put through a hoop by tho opponents, they peeled through six hoops, and finally peeled on to the peg, winning from Mesdamcs Lowery and Henderson,: 2C-12. -

King Brooches.. ■ . ■ Mcsdames Capes and Andrews (llsiut;ma) put up a big light against Mesdaiims Walker and Monks (WoLrarn)', but were not strong enough against the Woburn pair. Mrs. Capes was well on her long shooting, but neither she '■ nor Mrs. Andrews had many opportunities.' Mrs. Walker is playing a very sound game, and the Hautana players, who have not yet had much interelub experience, are to be commended for their plucky showing. • ' . -. ■ Dominion Tournament.. There are not nearly, so .many. Wellington entries for the Dominion events this year, due no doubt to players finding the heat so trying iv Wanganui when attending the North Island tournament last season. Many are saving themselves for the local tournament which is only .about a fortnight off, and are practising hard. * Those entering for Wanganui include Mesdamcs Johnson and Walker (Woburn), Savage and Mouat (Waimarie), Shelly and Clarke (Wellington), Pawson and Neumann (Central), Patterson/ Christio, and Lowery (Kelbum), Galdow (Hataitai). Mrs. H. Cook (Karori) who, is in her 83rd year, is. to be partnered with A. G. -F.'Ross, the Dominion's best player, and she is surely an example, and'should be an inspiration'to the women croquet players, if they.can feel that they will bo able to keep "merry and bright" and still enjoy croquet at 82. ' All' will wish Mrs. Cook the best of luck.' : : •' : '' Australian Visitors. ... On Wednesday, Ngaroma members, who are so well known for their hospitality, entertained the ladies who are with the visiting bowlers, and all spent a very enjoyable afternoon. Though all the visitors are not croquet players,

they arc interested in tho game,: and greatly enjoyed the competitioiis arranged. -The'winners of tho various events were Mesdames Cummings, Scott, Stone, and the Misses Scott, Stone, and Koxborough. The Mayor of Petone welcomed the visitors, and during afternoon'tea Mrs. Laurie (president), extended greetings and good wishes,' to which . Mrs. Scott (Cheltenham, N.S.W.), aptly replied. Four of the ladies from Australia played 1 friendly games on, the Hatailai lawns during the week. Answers to Correspondents. "Delegate."—Mrs. E. M'Kenzie is tho official delegate of the Wellington Association, ami will attend the meeting of-the Dominion Council in Waiiganui. . "Ball moved by wind."—Look at rule 42, clause E, and you will see if your ball came to rest and was then moved'by-the ..wind you could have replaced it. , • . '. "Kailway Concession."—lt is usual for competitors to get the concession, but perhaps the council has not arranged with tho Railway. Department. A note to Mr. .Ferguson, secretary, Croquet [Council, Pahuerstoii North, will. probably get matters adjusted, as there will bo the North Island tournament comj ing on, too. It would be wise to communicate with, the secretary first, and it will probably be arranged. Bowl-

ers receive the concession still, I believe. The Game. Having carried our game to the point where a break may be made by blue if that ball hits in or by theother side if blue misses, we can now turn our attention to the..finishing tactics.. It is absolutely necessary, to have some scheme mapped put in the mind as to how the game will be finished (all being well) before tho first break lias advanced beyond No. 1 back. If this is not done, disaster is almost sure to. follow. The method most popular with the first-class player is to stop the first break at four back, wire the opponents at No. 1 hoop and retire to near No. 3 corner with a rush to No. 1 hoop, giving the opposing side only one ball to shoot, at if possible. The opponent' will either shoot or retire to tho fourth corner, and, in either case, tho first-class player should be able to obtain a four ball.break in time to attempt a triple peel. ■■ ; ' The s^ond method of finishing is to make eleven hoops, in the first break, cross wire at the peg, and take the, partner balls either to near the fourth corner or to half-way down- the west boundary, with a rush to the middle of the lawn in each case. It must be remembered that it is. not necessary to give an open shot to the opponent balls* if that side is entitled to a lift. A balk shot it unavoidable, "so why bother whether it is taken under law 44 or law 29 (c)? If full advantage is taken of this fact, it is possible to make things quite difficult for the'opponent, it being comparatively easy to so place the balls that a double is avoided no matter where the opponent elects to play 'from.
