Sir James Gunson, ex-Mayor of Auckland, who retired from commercial life in 1916, has decided to resume an active business career. The death lias occurred in Auckland of Mr. Arthur Eady, aged 73, tho head of the firm of Arthur Eady, Ltd., music warehousemen, who were established in 1870, states a Press Association telegram. The deceased was a prominent Free Mason, and was past master of the Prince of Wales Lodge and a past senior grand warden of tho District Grand Lodge of English Freemasons. After a lengthy visit abroad, His Majesty's Trade- Commissioner, Mr. L. B. Beale, is expected to return to Wellington on or about 28th January. Mr. Beale „ spent a considerable time in Britain, and recently ariived in Sydney from the Malay Straits Settlements, where he went on a special mission on behalf of the Department of Overseas Trade. Cabled advice has been received from America of the death, the result of aa accident, of Mr. Norman Ilales, formerly of Wellington. ' The'late Mr. Norman Hales was the youngest'son of the late Mr. W. H. Hales, formerly En-gineer-in-Chief. lie was born in this city, and on leaving college took up dentistry. Possessing dramatic qualities, he became well known locally as an entertainer, and was a member of the Wellington Operatic Society and the "Charley's Aunt" Company organised by Mr. Norman Aitken.' Mr. Hales was a frequent performer at the Wellington Savage Club. About twelve years ago lie left for the United States and'took up dramatic work in that country with considerable success. Mr. E. O. Hales, Assistant Public Trustee, is a brother of the late Mr. Norman Hales.

Many members of the old Volunteer Corps in Wellington will learn with regret of the death in Wellington' on Wednesday of Sergeant J. G. Radford, D. Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery Volunteers. Sergeant Radford was closely associated with the battery for nearly forty years, and only retired to the; reserve in,; 1918.. During his service with the battery he was always, a popular n.e.o. Prior ;to joining, the battery he was a member of the Old Thames Rifles Volunteers, and was one of those under.arms' when-.the.Fenian, disturbance occurred many years ago. He held the Colonial Auxiliary and. the New Zealand Long Service decorations. For some years he was employed with J. J. Curtis "irnd Co., Ltd., carriers, and for a considerable time he was in the carrying business on his own account. He leaves a family of two sons and two daughters. His wife predeceased him some years ago. Amongst: those present at the funeral were Colonel A. J. Petherick, who commanded the D Battery for many years.
