BATTING RECORDS

PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET DEMPSTER'S THOUSAND The records of Plunkct Shield cricket, which was commenced in 1907, show that, although there have been many centuries, the registration of an aggregate of 1000 runs has.boon confined to a small band of batsmen. Prior to the present season fifteen players had made the achievement, with J. S. Hiddleston, of Wellington, well to the fore with a total of over 2000 runs. 1 ' There has been an addition to the list as the result of performances in the matches to date, C. S. Dempster, of Wellington, being the latest to join the distinguished party. It was during the Wel-lington-Canterbury match, at Christchurch, that.Dempster.passed the 1000 mark, scores of 63" ami 6 in" that gamp giving him an aggregate of 1013 runs for Plunket Shield cricket. Although he holds rank as New Zealand's most brilliant batsman, it is noteworthy that Dempster has not yet 'succeeded in making a centurj in Plunket Shield cricket, his highest seoro being 71. made last season.

Among other batsmen now well on the way to 1000 runs in Plunket Shield cricket are H. S. James (Wellington), A. W. Alloo (Otago), A. Galland (Otago), J. E. Mills (Auckland), T. 0 Lowry (Wellington), and E. H. Bowley (Auckland). A lew more opportunities in Shield cricket .should' also suffice to give W. A. Baker. (Wellington) and J. Shepherd (Otago) the distinction of making 1000 runs. Some of the bats ' men mentioned have been scoring, heavily in recent seasons, Lowry and Bowley having occupiod only two seasons'inpassing the 500 mark. H. C. Alloo (Otago) and H. D. Gillespie (Auckland) have this season joined the ranks of players to make over 500 runs in Plunfcct Shield matches.
