STOLEN BUTTER
CHARGE OF RECEIVING' A \>\ea of guilty wus entered by Robert Mackay, aged 48, when he was charged before Mr. B. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, that between 20th December and 7th January he obtained from Gordon White 421b of butter, valued at £3 3s, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Acting Chief-Detective Holmes sard tho circumstances vrere rather serious. Whik: running messages, which included obtaining butter, for a restaurant in tho city, a boy approached the accused, who conducted a small confectionery business, and offered to sell him butter at Is a lb, for which the accused was in the habit of paying Is Cd a lb wholesale. The' accused bought two or threo lots of butter from the, boy and then questioned him as to its source. The boy admitted that tho butter was .stolen, saying ho had a mate in tho wire-house, where the bu.tter was obtained, and they wore sharing tho proceeds. In spite of this information the accused bought another lot of butter from tho boy. The accused was fined £20, in default three mouths' imprisonment.
