A REAL BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS
"Lawless Days." By Mona Tracy. Christchurch: Whitcombo and Tombs,' Ltd. Not before has the romance" of tliis southern corner of tho earth been.so deftly woven i'qr children. These distant "colonies of' the South Spas" are mado vivid for us with all the adventure, hardships, and fortunes of their first beginnings. ■ ' The story arises out-of a lonely lad's desiro to follow a' hero uncle to tho Indies, and his mistake in boarding a wrong vessel in tho fog. Tho "Currency Lass" is that most 'dreadful thing, a convict ship, bearing its tortured cargo to the exile of Van Diemen's Land. Dick Arden's adventures, cast upon the iiot' too conspicuous mercies of lawless men, mako a narrative that.grips tho interest'all tho way. Much that is truo of the customs of the Maori, and incident based on' historical fact, give the talc an added value. One is sorry to close the covers on such tried friends as Barry and Betsy, and tho native Tupi. Moua Tracy, whoso name is widely known as o New Zealnnd writer of strength and dexterity, has achieved something for childhood in this book. It is illustrated in full-page wash-drawings and colours 'by G. Honry Evison. Here, indeed, is a-.prize for boy or. girl.— "Fairiel."
