CATHEDRAL AT TOURNAI
FAMOUS CHURCH AFIRE /. • . ' / ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE Australian Press Association. (Received 2Gth October, 2.30 p.m.) BRUSSELS, 25th October. The famous Romanesque Cathedral of Tonrnai is afire. It contains pictures by Rubens and Jordaens. Apparently tho outbreak was due to the carelessness of workmen restoring the roof, which is now fully ablaze. The damage is enormous, and it is feared that the stone vaulting may collapse into the nave of the church. Tho cathedral is often considered the choicest architectural treasure of Belgium owing to its five graceful towers, which it was feared would collapse. It is now hoped that this danger has been passed. A rainstorm helped the firemen to extinguish the fire.
