THE DOLE

(To the Editor.: ' Sir, —Under the heading "A Novel Idea," in to-night's "Evening Post," a statement by Mr. J. J. Clark, or rather a mis-statement, calls for comment. Ha is reported to have said that three'pounds per week per breadwinner was being paid to the million out of work at Home. Now, when I left Home four years ago, the amount of the dole (erroneously so called) payable to a married man was 15s per week, 5s for his wife, and Is for each child under 14 years of age. If the "dole" is still paicl in the same ratio, to draw Mr. Clark's £3 per week, each married couple would require to have 40 children under 14 years of age. These figures cannot be challenged by Mr. Clark, or anyone else, as a copy of the existing regulations for that period can still be got. Personally, I can quite easily prove what I say is correct, as I was a trade union official at Home, and had very close dealings with the working of the Unemployment Insurance Act at that particular period.—l am, etc., , A. SHEARER.
