WEEK-END WEATHER

UNSETTLED CONDITIONS J?or the past twenty-four hours the weather has been mainly fair over the North Island and the east coast districts of tho South. During last night, however a depression of slight intensity crossed the South Island. The latter has accounted for a change to westerly and northerly winds and an increase in their force during'the night in and south of Cook Strait, but this morning the direction was again southerly on the west coast and the southern portion of the South Island. Westland and Otago had showers fairly generally in the night, and these_ conditions were still reported in those districts and by this morning had extended to the Cape Egmont region. An intense depression is now developing in the western Tasman Sea, indicating unsettled conditions for the week-end. The forecast is for moderate to strong winds between north-west and southwest, veering generally to northerlies shortly and freshening to gale force in many places. Some scattered showers are likely in western and southern districts at first, but otherwise mainly fair; later conditions becoming unsettled generally, with some rain. Milder temperatures may bo expected tomorrow.
