9r "SPBINTtH" AN EARLY START PIPE-OPENER ON MONDAY ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS • The local amateur athletes . and cyclists promise to be given, an excellent send-off on the season's competitive racing at the Basin Beserve on Monday evening, when the annual Labour Day sports are to be held for the first time under electric' light. The meeting will have the services of Wellington A.A. Centre officials in the mattor of control, and there should be nothing lacking on that score. The entries live exceptionally good for such an early start oi' the season, but many of the athletes have been in training and there is every prospect of good form being shown, while keenness of competition should add to the attractiveness of the meeting, hi the afternoon the trades' union, events and the primary school races will be held at Newtown. Park, and with the open events at the Basin. Reserve in the evening there will be secondary school contests. • The fields for Monday evening promise to be very good. Among the sprinters intending to take part are Fleming, Maekay, Bird, Broad (from Wanganui), Veitch, Cunningham, Allan, and Thompson. : The entrants for the half'mile include 0. Campbell, Watt, Cunningham, G. Bayne, Zander, and Berry. A number of the half-mil-e'rs are also in the field for the mile. The ladies' events have also drawn good entries, several of the lady runners who ran prominently last season, with new-eoniers, being among the entrants. The interclub relay will be contested by Olympic, Scottish Harriers, Wellington, Athletic, and University. The cycling races should be a feature of the sports meeting, as the entries are- large. Among the riders entered are Scarfc, Bray, Gano, M'Fcdries, Hayes, Eobiuson, • Horsfall, Poulton, Poote, Manning, and Blakeway (from Wairarapa). "Beaten, but Not Disgraced."
