DUNEDIN ARCADE

EIGHTS OP THE PUBLIC (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. Some wekes ago the Arcade Company] intiiuate.d.'that:it -intended -to-erect barriers at each end of tho Arcade, to demonstrate that the public. had aot the right of access. The company's solicitors have now been written to pointing out that tho creetion of barriers is unnecessary, as the Corporation agrees to view the position as if barriers wera actually erected. Definite steps are now being taken by the Corporation, to test the right of the public to use the Arcade- as a thoroughfare. The city, solicitors, who have received instructions .to commence an action against the Arcade Company, with the view of establishing a right of user, are desirous of receiving information - of. a relevant nature from persons who have knowledge of the. early history, of the locality. ■ ■It is claimed on the company's part that there is a moral-side to the position. "For years," said a man closely; associated with the conivjany, "we havei been inviting people' to come into our property. We have given them light, given them a good walking service, and swept the place for them; now they want to take possession. We can find no evidence that the public has a right. It seems to us to. be infra dig. for the council to try to 'jump our claim.' The I council also intends to spend some of our money hi trying to do so."
