SEVERE COLD SNAP (From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 15th October. This morning Nelson awoko to find tho surrounding hills white with hail and snow. Eveu down. on the Pringo and almost to the sea at Wakapuaka tho unusual covering was to be seen. A fair amount fell at Tahuna, and where it had drifted against tho cliffs the covering was a foot deep. There was a cold wind blowing most of Sunday, and the storm came after dark, bui fortunately very little damage appears to | have been done. To-night will tell the I tale, as it is feared that a frost will follow similar to the bad frost on 13th October, 1920, when considerable damage was done to tomatoes, potatoes, etc. The Nelson amateurs had a wonderful reception in Blenheim on Saturday night when "The Belle of New York" was shown. The theatre,. which seats 1175, was packed to the doors, and the audience was most enthusiastic. The players wore entertained to supper by tho Blenheim Society after the performance. On the return journey yesterday the party lunched at the delightful camping ground at Pelorus Bridge. The'delegates to the Empire Forestry Conference, who are visiting New Zealand, arrived in Nelson for dinner on Saturday evening, en route for Wellington, and were met by the Mayor (Mr. W. J Moffatt) and Mr. H. Atmore, M.P. The delegates left by the Ngaio at 8 p.m. The tennis season was opened at Richmond on Saturday afternoon, when a large attendance of players and friends attended at the Richmond courts.. Mrs. Currie performed the opening ceremony, and afterwards entertained the 'gathering to afternoon tea. A good deal of hard work is put in by tho committee of tho Nelson A. and P. Association prior to the show each 1 year, and at Saturday's meeting a ready response was made to the request of the president (Mr. George Manson) for workers for the annual working-beo. It is hoped to have the Washbourn Memorial Gates completed for . the show. . . One of the forestry delegates had the misfortune to step over the wharf into ''he water when embarking on the Ngaio on Saturday evening. There was a high tide running, but he managed to cling to a pile till a ropo was lowered. The suitcase he was carrying was lost. The om.ial closing of the Motueka Golf Club was held on Saturday afternoon. In spite of bad weather, there was a good attendance of members and friends, and the trophies won during the past season were presented by the. president, Dr. Green. Miss Douglas was senior champion and Miss Austin junior in the ladies' division; Mr. F. J. Painter won the men's championship.
