THE MEAT TRADE

BEEF A FEATURE A YEAR'S EXPORTS - 'Evening Post," 16th October. One of the most remarkable features of the meat 'export trade of the Dominion for the twelve months ended 30th • September, is the expansion o£ tlio beeE export trade. It has more than doubled oa that of 3927----28, and the export'trade in pork is half as-large against as it was'the previous twelve months. The Meat Producers' Board now furnishes returns of exports for a full twelve months beginning Ist October, ending 30th •September and this shows heavy increases in ;beef, lamb, and pork, and a slight shrinkage in mutton. The return of exports and where they were shipped to, for the past two years are as follow: —

Totals 188.39T 2,108,D9T 5,383,912 53,91t8 It will be noticed that Canadian and United States markets are taking largely increased quantities of beef and mutton, but shipments of lamb are in reduced volume to Canada, but increased from 2000 to 32,000 carcasses to New York. Pork is confined to Great Britain. .Increased quantities of meat are shown to be shipped this year just closed, direct to British ports other than London, including Hull, on the North East Coast, and Southampton for the South of England. Antwerp imports of hecf are '•boiit 1000 quarters more; at Marseilles ■•r> meat ivas landed this year as compared with 12,000 quarters of beef for 1920-27 period. The Panama Canal zone (Cristobal) figures in the list of importers of New Zealand beef and no doubt army requirements account for beef landed at Port Said; London increased its imports of lamb, pork, and beef, and was rather less than 90,000 carcasses down on its mutton imports as cotapared with last year's imports. The. slaughterings for the twelve months show increases in beef, ewe mutton, lambs, pork, boneless beef, and sundries. Stocks on hand in New Zealand are greater in beef, ewe mutton, and lamb, and pork, boneless beef, and sundries, than they were at 30th. September, 1927. ' '"."'. At 30th September, 1927, meat loaded but not left the Dominion consisted of 580 quarters beef, 59,282 carcasses mutton, and 95,670 lambs. The 1928-29 season promises to be prolific so far as production is concerned, but the market is necessarily uncertain and to prophecy ■would be highly courageous at this time. However; producers will .no doubt qualify their optimisim. Causes of improvement in the 1927 markets over those- of 1926 are attributed to the improved industrial situation in Great Britain, following the prolonged and widespread coal-miners' strike. Unemployment is still heavy in the United Kingdom, but there is a decided tendency in the direction of trade revival in certain industries,- and' that improvement is likely to be maintained. Its effect ou the consumption of meat, however, remains to be' seen,, so, too, are the influences', of Home ; production and supplies, especially of lambs, from competitive sources.
