CROQUET NOTES

- ♦ —*-— The "VVaiinario Croquet Club opened its 1025r29. season'at Ridclifoi-d Park on Saturday afternoon. Although the weather was.-, unfavourable, there was a very large attendance of representatives of other clubs, amongst those, present being Mrs. Austin (president), Mrs." E. M'Kenaie (hon. secretary), Mrs. Wilkinson (hon. treasurer) of the Croquet Association. Mrs. Strand, Mayoress and patroness of the club, who has-been indisposed for a considerable time, Was given a warm welcome; also Mrs. G. A. Chapman and Mrs. 1\ Gowing. . The president (Mrs. Savage), in extending a hearty welcome to all visitors and friends, also introduced Mr. Strand (Mayor), who during his opening speech referred-.to croquet and all games in which women could take part; he also made, feeling reference to the loss sustained by Mr. and Mrs. Gr. Mouat, who are both members of the club. Mrs. King, who has presented a pair of gold mallet, brooches for competition among the Hutt clubs, was called upon to present them to tho first holders, Mesdames Extern and Kelly. A delicious afternoon tea was served in. the Plunket.Boom, the tables being decorated in the club colours, brown and gold. Bouquets'were presented to the president (Mrs.. Savage), patroness (Mrs. Strand), and vice-presi-dent (Mrs. Exton). The following: were the winners of the various games played:—Angles, Mrs. Shelly; runnerup, 1-Mrs. Dryden. Leaf, Mrs. Stonehouse; runner-up,, Mrs. Bairisey. Tunnel, Mrs. B. M'Kenzic; ruuner-up, Mrs. Charleswortti. Musical- sticky Mesdames Warburton and'Ayson. Quoits, Mrs. Upton. A very handsome basket was presented by Mrs. Gowing for competition amongst the visitors, and was won by Mrs. J. August. The greens at St. Augustine's Cro-quet-Club, Petone, were officially opened for the season on Saturday last by. the Mayor of Petoue (Mr.- M'Kenzie). Tho president (the Eev. Mr. Bamson) welcomed the visitors, and called on the Mayor to perform the opening ceremony. In responding, Mr. M'Kenzie complimented the club on its successes during the past season, and declared the greens open, after which Mrs. M'Kenzie proceeded to put the ball through the first hoop. Mrs. Sprott also made a happy little speech, and said as patroness of the club she would like to present a shield or trophy for competition among the members. Bouquets of flowers, with streamers of the club colours, were presented by little Nancy Heron to the Mayoress, Mrs. Sprott, and Mrs. Eamson, these being the gift of Mrs. Norton Smith. Dainty afternoon tea was served in the Lads' Boom, where the. tables were decorated with the club colours, blue and brown. Among the guests were the officials of the Wellington Croquet Association (Mrs. Austin, president, Mrs. Earl M'Kenzie, hon. secretary, and Mrs. Wilkinson (hon. treasurer), while representatives from the different dubs in Wellington and suburbs were also present. The weather, although windy, was fine, so, that outdoor competitions were indulged in, at which. the following ladies were successful: —Ladder, Mrs. Bush, Haeremai Club; golf, Mrs. Broeklebank,: Central Club, Petone; french, Mrs. Henderson, Wellington; angles, Mrs. Johnson, Karori or Kelburti; peg, Mrs. Earl M'Kenzie, Hataitai.-. . ' . '. . ; Beautiful weather favoured the opening of the Lyall Bay Croquet Club on Saturday, and a. large number, of friends and members were present. The president (Mrs; Mowtell) performed the opening ceremony. Beautiful bouquets were presented: to the president, Hon. Life-President (Mrs. Moran), hon. secretary (Mrs. Marshall), and Mrs. JSToad. Mr. Noad, president of. the Lyall Bay Bowling • Club, ■' congratulated the club on the condition of the green. , Afternoon, tea.was served in the pavilion, the tables being beautifully decorated with .White naTcissi. • Many, thanks are due to the caretaker (Mr. Carr) for.his untiring work on.the green.' He has made a great improvement in a short time, and the members' are looldng forward to a successful season. . Competitions : •were held, the winners being Mrs. O'Donnell (Kelburn), Peg., Mrs. Bhodes Williams (Karori), French, and Mrs. Gilbanks, break. Among those present were Mrs; Austin (president W.C.A.), Mr. and Mrs. Earl M'Kenzie, Mrs. Bhbdes Williams, Mrs: O'Donueil, and representatives of the local clubs.
