STATE INSTITUTIONS

-• It was alleged by the Loader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives yesterday that the "1928 Committee" was making a determined attack upon various State institutions and the Public Trust Office in particular. So far -as the published statements of the "1928 Committee" arc concerned, wo do not think that they have gone beyond the bounds of legitimate criticism and propaganda. Any committee or organisation, whether of business men or trades unionists, has a perfect right to submit its opinions to the Government and to tho public. That does not mean, however, that t-lic public are bound to accept the opinions or that tho Government should adopt them without taking particular pains to study the other side. As touching the work of tho Public Trust Office we are not aware of any published attack by the "1928 Committee"; but there has been criticism from other quarters, and somp of it has been unwarranted and unfair. In considering such criticism, we believe that the Government will be fully alive to the public interest and will not allow a great public enterprise to bo menaced. It is acknowledged by members on all sides of the House that great and growing service is given by the Public Trust Oilicc, and public opinion would never tolerate any attempt to hinder such service or, in the interests I and at the behest of individuals, to hobble a State institution whose operations arc so widely beneficial to the community.
