BOY'S DEATH
♦ CRUSHED BY MOTOR-LORRY No blame was attached by tho Coroner to the driver of the motor-lorry which fatally crushed Maurice Irons, aged 12, when the inquest on the deceased was held yesterday afternoon. The accident happened at 3.45 p.m. on Monday outside the publishiug office of the "Evening Post," and the boy died a little over an hour later in tho Wellington Hospital. The Coroner (Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M.) said that it was an extremely sad case. His verdict, in accordance with the .medical testimony, was that tho boy died from internal abdominal injuries received through being crushed between the rear of a motor-lorry, driven by Bay Allen, and the landing stage of tho "Evening Post" Publishing Department. Tho evidence showed that the lorry, which was being backed iv from Willis street, stopped some distance from the loading section of the Publishing Department. There wero boys, who were waiting for papers, playing in the yard, and tho deceased suddenly darted out from tho right of the entrance. At that time, tho driver of tho lorry, looking out to see if the way was clear for him, started again, and tho boy was knocked up against the landing stage. Asa result of the impact ho was "bent" over, but did not fall. He complained of pains in the stomach, but said he would' soon bo quite all right again. Tho City Ambulance was summoned and the deceased was taken to. the Hospital, where he died about twenty minutes after his admission. "The evidence," commented the Coroner, "including what little independent evidence was available, shows that no blame is attachablo to the driver."
