THE NOLAN CASE

.—, » —i . (To the Editor.) Sir,—lt would bo interesting to know what good purpose the Labour Party hope to serve by the misleading cable sent by it to the "Daily Herald," London, on New Zealand's unemployment. To tell tho readers of the socialist' paper that the Reform. Party'is all wrong and the Labour Party entirely right seems superfluous, ag tho Socialist Labourites will believe that without being told. To wire "Nolan's" statement contained in : his own letter is surely a joke. Where could his state* ment be but in his own letter. It ib not the mutter, in the deceased's letter which was under discussion, arid to. which "strong exception was taken, but the statements of the Waitomo branch of the Labour Party:— ■' ' "■ - • (1) "That the iucideut (the circum« stances.of-Nolan's death) was only one of many of a like nature :.which have recently occurred." ••.••• • •.t ■'. (2) "'That hundreds of starving men are wandering over the roads ,of the country." What the' Labour Party has to justify is this action of. sending such information to England: The first is palpably false, and the second has no proof attached to ■it. ''• '• ' '■'■' "-■• The cable reference to "Nolan's letter is but an endeavour to cover tho real question. Besides this cable does not tell that the unemployment-here is less than last year: that fewer relief works are required, that the Government restricted immigration a year ago on account of the | temporary depression. What is most, notable is that the Labour Party in thesemessages to the outside world -presents New Zealand in as bad light aa possible. It. is a now method of party politics and one which the people ai'e not likely to appreciate.—We aye, etc.,. ■ „ N.Z. WELFARE LEAGUE, J
