TECHNICAL EDUCATION

HUTT VALLEY NEEDS When the Education Keport was being discussed in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. T. M. Wilford (Hutt) said he hoped that full provision would be made for technical education in the Hutt Valley. Opportunity to acquire further land for the purpose should be mado now, seeing that the growth of the district was so rapid. The Hon. A. D. M'Leod (Minister of Industries and Commerce): "It will probably double itself in a few years." "I shall probably not be here," said Mr. Wilford, "but I hope that the Government will take advantage of the opportunity to acquire the vacant sections adjacent to the Petone Technical College to meet the expansion that will take pla«e." The.Minister of Education (tho Hon. R. A. Wright) assured Mr. Wilford that the matter had not been overlooked. The fact of the matter was that the site was not considered to be a good one, even in v'ew of the purchase of the buildings. It would still be a very small section, and it was his opinion that a very large technical school would be required in Petone. The mattor had not been lost sight of, and if anything could be done that would expedite the work it would be done. Mr. Wilford: "Does the Minister see that unless tho two sections adjoining the site are ta'kcn at once they may be built on and it will then be a very expensive matter to purchase them?" Mr. Wright: "That is a very important point. It is very costly tp have to buy houses as well as land."
