UNSETTLED WEATHER

RAIN AT MANY PLACES During last night another southern depression crossed the South Island, and on the northern portion of this depression a small cyclone has developed, which this morning was centred wost of Cape Egniont. Winds, which wore mainly strong northerlics yesterday, with gale force at places, have changed to southerlies and easterlies in the middle provinces on account of tho development of tho cyclone. With the exception of Canterbury, most parts of tho Dominion have experienced cloudy and unsettled weather, with rain in nearly all districts. At places some heavy falls have occurred, more especially north of Auckland and in tho northwest portion of the South Island. Wellington registered 64 points of rain; Farewell Spit, 212 points; Westport, ISI points; and Arthur's Pass, 110 points. The forecast is for strong * winds, south-westerlies from Auckland northwards, and variable winds, with modorato to strong southerlies prevailing, shortly in the central portion of the Dominion; strong north-westerlies in the south, gradually becoming genera! duriug tho next twenty-four hours and reaching gale force in many places. The weather is likely to be fair in most of the eastern districts of tho South Island, but elsewhere unsettled with rain, though a temporary improvement is probable shortly, except on tho West Coast of the South Island.
