CANNED FRUITS

CRISIS IN AUSTRALIA A LOST JAM TRADE i "Evening Post," 12th September. Australia .is having great difficulty in •arriving at a satisfactory solution of the 'canned fruit trade problem. The New South Wales State Cabinet was informed by the Minister for Agriculture that the surplus production of canned fruits had to be disposed of at a price considerably lower than that obtaining on the local market. The opinion expressed by the Cabinet was that the problem should be solved by the canners co-operating among themselves. Some canners were exploiting the Australian market, and leaving it to others to dispose of their products overseas. An official statement issued by the 'Premier (Mr. Bavin) pointed out that so serious had the position become that it bad been decided by the Ministry that the canners should confer with a view to ananging for the establishment of an equalisation fund, under which all canners should share in any loss occasioned by export. Then whatever legislation was deemed' necessary would be introduced. Insures contained in the annual report of the Canned Fruits Export Control Board presented to the. Federal Parliament show that the 1928 canning season was the heaviesf experienced by the industry. The record quantity of 3,252,686 dozen tins of apricots, peaches, and pears had been proved compared with a yield m the previousseason of 1,934,630 dozen tins. It -^ expected that "one million dozen would bo exported this season, compared witn W dozen in 1927.
