QUICK WORK
FILM OP THE FLIGHT I The Government Publicity Department with its battery of cinema operators, was very much on the spot in con-
' nection with the arrival yesterday of the Southern Cross in Christehurch, all phases of that historical event being recorded oh the celluloid. The films, in an undeveloped state, reached Wellington this morning at 7 o'clock by the Wahine. They were met and immediately rushed to the laboratories at Miraraar. All was in readiness there for them, development being complete at 7.30 a.m. Telegrams sent yesterday by the operators in Christehurch gave an indication of the necessary; titles. These were made yesterday, and were ready by this morning. The idea was to have the film entire* ly completed for screening this morning at 10 o'clock, invitations having been sent out by the Prime Minister for a screening at that hour this morning of Government Publicity films. However, the best laid schemes even at Government officials, do not ahvayi

come off exactly as arranged, ana this timo there was a hitch. The very; damp morning prevented the film froiu drying thoroughly by 10 o'clock, 80 the screening of this particular item was postponed until this afternoon. But in spite of this, the Department showed that it can hustle as well as its American competitors, one officer suggesting this morning that the only way in which to have speeded matters up would have been to charter the Southern Cross itself to bring to Wellington the h'lms of its own landing at Christchurch instead of waiting for the more prosaic ferry boat. Copies of tho films are to be despatched to alt parts of the world for screening, and for showing, incidentally, that the Government Publicity Department of the Dominion is very much alive.
