Formerly: a captain of industry in Lancashire, chairman of the Spinners' Association, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, a banker and financier, ho got into difficulties in the post-war slump and came to London in the hope of retrieving his fortunes. He speculated heavily, lost everything, borrowed from money-lenders, and failed for £118,000.
