The Prime Minister, referring to the waterfront trouble, informed the House of Representatives that the Government intended to take immediate firm action to enforce the observance of Judge Beeby's award. "This Parliament," he added, "recently passed a measure designed to ensure obedience to awards, and the wharf workers' present action constitutes a direct definance of the Court." Mr. Bruce commented on the incessant trouble at the Queensland ports, chiefly .Cairns, where the producers' maize and sugar were rotting owing to waterfront troubles. He said that he had communicated with the Premiers of all the States, asking them to afford protection for free labour, and also to take such other steps as might be deemed neceb^ry to keep ships running. With these measures the Commonwealth Government would afford the fullest co-oper-ation. Mr. Bruce has telegraphed to the Waterside Federation a solemn warning embodying the Government's intentions.
