Painleve, is going to Metz for a four days' conference- in connection, with the reorganisation of France's eastern frontier. There is an initial credit of £1,750,000 in tho figures of the 1928 French Budget for new fortifications, which are described v a succession of organised defence regions from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, additional to the usual defence works, such as forts, redoubts, batteries, and equipment. Each fortified zone will inclutlo important road work, railway tracks, earth and concrete embankments, and underground passages.
