EX-ENEMY PROPERTY

CANADIAN SETTLEMENTS

(From "The Post's" Representative.) OTTAWA, Bth August. All outstanding accounts arising out of the Great War in which Canada is an interested party are to be finalised soon. It is expected that thej' will be clpsed on the visit of the Prime Minister to Geneva at the Leagne of Nations Assembly next month. The only ex-enemy country with which a clearing-house arrangement exists is Germany, with whom Canada has now made a complete adjustment. No such plan, however, has been possible with Austria-Hungary or Bulgaria, but arrangements have been made for a complete clearance at. once with these two countries. All Canadian claims against Austria-Hungary have been liquidated, and property of that country held in custody will be returned. The amount, in connection with Hungary is £150,000, in favour of tho Mcsscy-Harris Company. The amount has now been paid by that country. Outstanding accounts with Bulgaria amount to only £12,000. All that remains in regard to Germany is to give particulars of claims that have been paid out in Canada from German money in Canadian banks during tho war in accordance with the Peace Treaty. In regard to reparations Hie claims allowed total £1,000,000. The great bulk of them arc in the maritime provinces, due to the loss of fishing vessels. The claims of the owning companies for paymont without delay will be considered at Geneva.
