GAS SUPPLY

MAKARA AND JOHNSONVILLE

The Johnsonville and Makara Ga» Supply Bill was passed by tho House of Representatives last night. Mr. T. M. Wilford (Hutt) asked if the Bill would conflict with the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas-lighting Bill of last session, which gave Petone and Lower Hutt tho right to supply Johnsonvlle with gas. Mr. W. H. Field (Otaki) said Petone and Lower Hutt had the right to supply gas .within a radius of five miles of tho Post Office in both. places. Representatives of both Petone and Lower Hutt had discussed the matter with tho Local Bills Committee. When the Bill was in Committee Mr. J. M' Combs (Lyttelton) moved an. amendment with the object of providing that in the event of the Johnsonville Town Board tho Makara County Council purchasing gasworks or plant from- the Wellington Gasworks it should not b» necessary for them to pay for the goodwill. There had been cases in which local bodies had been called npon to pay heavily through not including such a provision. Mr. Field said he could not accept the amendment, as if it was adopted it would mean that Johnsonville and Makara would not get their gas supply. Mr. M'Combs did not press his amendment to a diivsion, and it was nost on the voices.
