BILL TO LEGALISE USE GOVERNMENT MEASURE" x British Official Wireless! : EUGBY, 12th July. The Eaeecourse Betting Bill to legalise the use of the totalisator, which is before Parliament as a private member's Bill, will be taken over by the Government. This is in aceordanee with the promise given that if the Bill secured a second reading on a free vote of the Houso of Commons, the Government I would afford time for consideration of its further stages. In the absence of Government facilities further progress could not have been made this session as the time set aside for it as a private Bill was exhausted. Referring to intention to treat the Bill as a Government measure, the Prime Minister in the House of Commons to-day said that one reason was that the measure would bo of very con siderable assistance to the Exehoquer, and, if passed, would make possible the remodelling of the betting taxes. Many members also believed very firnv ly that it would have a very appreciable effect in helping to cleanse British racecourses. '
