VICIOUS ASSAULT
BEFRIENDED YOUNG MAN LAWYER'S WIFE DsJUREr (By Telejrrnph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. A young man, William Patrick Leary, was "arrested this morning on a charge of assaulting Mrs. Gwilliam, wife of Mr. K. H. Guilliam, a well-known solicitor. Leary was recently convicted of breaking, entering, and theft, and admitted to probation. Mr. Guilliam, who defended him, gave him employment in his household, where he was giving satisfaction This morning Mrs. Guilliam had spoken to him, and turned away, when ha attacked her with a scrubbing brush ami carpenter's mallet. A chance visitor caused Leary to decamp, but not before Ik- had inflicted severe injuries. Subsequently he surrendered to the police, and said that he could not account for his conduct. Mrs. Guilliam was removed to hospital, but her injuries aro not expect ed to have serious consequences.
