DAIRY INDUSTRY

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. At the annual meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Factories' Association yesterday afternoon, Mr. S. A.»Broadbelt (Levin) presided, and there was a representative attendance of members. The annual report" stated that at the beginning of last dairying season as. a reBult.of negotiations with freezing v/orks day-old calves were sold locally at a definite price, whereas it had boen discovered since that South Island farmers who sold co-operatively had received substantially higher prices. During the year the executive had joined with other interests in an endeavour to place the pork industry on a more satisfactory footing by securing a better description of the pork which was imported into the Old Country, by larger exports of pork from New Zealand, by a Government subsidy on exported pork and by imported foodstuffs for piss being placed on the free list. The executive joined the protest against the reduction of the weight of pigs for export from 1501b to HOlb. Notwithstanding the combined efforts of the several interests concerned, the pig business had no,t yet been as satisfactory during the past year as could be desired, and the executive would continue ■. to , give, close attention thereto and ,to take such action as may be. appropriate^ The executive made strong protests against the long; distance concession made by the Railway Department in respect of deliveries of truck loadß of' butter and cheese. The effect of the concession had been to enable a large dairy company iln the North to use the Wellington market to the disadvantage of local companies. The concession was ; disapproved by the executive arid would be resisted from time to j time as opportunity occurred.: • Mr. C. G. C. Dormer; chairman of the Chelterham Dairy Company, in seconding . the adoption of the report and balancesheet, emphasised the need for more support and co-operation, - The idea was to; get all the factories to co-operate in dealing with the'disposal of the butter in the same way as the farmers c-operated for its manufacture. • ' ' : ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The retiring members of the executive, Messrs. Broadbelt, Hanaen, and Deraer, were re-elected, the full executive being Messrs. S. A. Broadbelt, H. E. Pacey, P. Hnnsen, T. Ranford, C. G. C. Dermer, J. Teale, % Dalziell. Mr. J. C. Brechin, of Pahiatua, delivered an address on the day-old calf industry, pointing out that last year 760,000 cnlvcs weio exported from New Zealand, While the North Island farmers only received five shillings per head, the South Islanders, who marketed co-operatively, received' altogether 12s per head for.their calves. ' ■•■ ■ •• . . ■;. ■■ ■■■ vi1 ■■■,■. \ .•.- After discussion the meeting unanimously resolved to form a co-operative marketing association and a strong committee consisting of_ representatives of 'factories on both sides of the range was formed to further the proposal, "~ I
