MAIN HIGHWAYS
FURTHER MILEAGE DECLARED Yesterday's "Gazette" contains an Ordor-in-Council declaring a further 690 miles of road to be main highways. These declarations complete the secondary highways which the Main Highways Board is declaring, and on which a maintenance subsidy will be paid out of the proceeds of the petrol tax. A limited amount of money will also be made available on these new highways for construction purposes. Yesterday's mileage makes the total length of highways taken over by the board this year 3455. The total of main highways in the Dominion is now over 10,000 miles, which is equivalent to approximately 25 per cent, of all lengths of rural roads in the Dominion, and, of course, provides a; very much higher percentage than that in relation to traffic density. . > Among others, the list includes the following:— . -.
