The Charlemagne tower at Tours (France), which dates from the eleventh century, and is ono of the last vestiges oC the old basilica of Saint Martin, hils collapsed. With a noise like the ignition of a train of powder tho south-east flank of lue tower, which is 150 ft high, fell, and the adjoining house? and shops within n radius ol' 50 yards had to bo evacuated. There were no fatalities. The structure was supposed to contain the sepulchre of Hildcgarde, one o£ the wives o£ Charlemagne. '..'......
