Two previous pollß taken on the ratepayers' vote were invalidated on technicalities. The figures were:—For abolition, 1286; against, .1124. The council intends to establish -a municipal bus service. Daylight Saving. , . The Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club, at its annual meoting, passed tho following resolution:—"That this meeting desires to express its appreciation of the benefits of Mr. Sidey 's Summer Time Act, and further expresses its hope that he will be enabled to ylaee it on the Statute Book this session as a enactment." E.M.S. Victory. . Portsmouth dockyard lias got on well jWith the work of restoring H.M.S. Victory to her Trafalgar condition. The vessel is being1 rp-rigged and this task is being carried out by dockyard riggers. The rrjords of tho rigging of tho ships of the Eoyal Navy of 1805 are by no means voluminous, and it has been found necessary to make blue print drawings of the various parts, and sections of tho ship's rigging. A new steel main yard is about to be.hoisted into place, and with the present rate of progress the restoration should bo com-, pletcd by Trafalgar Day this year. Lord Nelson's walk between tho guns on the quarter-deck has been restored, and the skylight on the quarter-deck of the Victory which Nelson had removed in order that he might have a clear space to walk up and down between the guns, and which was again replaced in the ship after the Battle of Trafalgar, has been once more planked' over. It will bo a fine sight when all tho work is done. Galvanised Iron Corrosion. Tho suggestion that the shipping companies and other interests concerned should combine to ascertain by research tho cause of corrosion of galvanised iron goods when in transit, was made by a witness in tho Supremo Court at Auckland (states the "New Zealand Hoi-aid"). The witness, Mr. Samuel Page, was giving evidence as an expert analyst and chemist in a case in which damages were claimed for deterioration of galvanised wire. "Until the interests concerned in matters of this kind get together," he said, "and get a thorough investigation into the causes of this frequently mysterious corrosion of iron goods on ships, losses of this kind will continually occur. These bodies should take tho matter in hand and have research done, otherwise they will constantly bo' in the position of calling experts to. give evidence without sufficient .data." New Addington Shops. It is only a matter of a couple of ntonths now until the whole of the rail- j way shops at present under construction at Addington will be ' completed (says the "Lyttelton Times"). Tho finishing touches are being put on tho wheels and bogies shop, and the woodmill, ths wood wagon, and the reclaim j shop are on tho verge of completion. j.-. portion, of tho new steel wagon shop has been built, but until, the present ■ machine shop is demolished, and all the machinery shifted, a job that is expected to take about eight months, the main portion of this shop cannot bo built. Some months ago'!a now ■ tarpaulin shop was built, the old shop being -;sed as a store. The.old shop is to be demolished, but this cannot bo done until the present foundry is shifted to Hillside. Nothing definite has been decided yet regarding tho removal of tho staff from Christchureh to Hillside, and vico -versa. Tho matter depends on tho dato of tho completion of the Hillside shops, and these are a good way behind Addington in the matter of progress. ' ■ , Whitebait. \ . „ ■ ■ Some catches of. whitebait havo already, been secured this season in tho Waikato Kiver below' Tuakau (states tho'"Now Zealand Herald"). Tho fish arc stated to be in .excellent conditionbut littlo has been marketed, as most catches so far have not been more than sufficient for the home consumption of those who secured them.
