EXCHANGE OF LETTERS

SCHOOL RECIPROCITY -, (From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, 21at March. A thousiiiul letters from scliool children in New Zealand were received * a fortnight ago by tliq cilucjition nuthcritics at AVarrington, a town of 77,000 inhabitants on, the River Mersey* These letters were sent by parcel post by the School Children's ■Empire' Reciprocal Publicity Schcnic. The following schools have received letters:- — Arpley Street Parochial Boys', Benmont Boys', Bolton Boys', and Girls', Evelyn. Street Boys' and Girls', Fairfield, Hamilton- Street Boys' and Girls',1 Heathside Boys' and Girls'; Ladies' Scho.ol of Industry, Our Lady's, Latchford; St. James's, Oaluvood Avenue Boys' and Girls', St. Albaiis, St. Ann's, at. Barnabas Js, St. Benedict's, and St.. Mary's Boys' and. Girls'. The AVarrington school children 'a replies are now being collected at "the local education office, and ■when all are received they will bo despatched to New Zealand. ' ■ ' In tho very best scheme there arc sometimes matters which might be mi: proved. A which is being sent from New Zealand to the' scliooj children here is a little out of date Under the present arrangements for migration some of tho statements might be misleading, and prove an embarrassment'to the Migration" Department of the High Commissioner's Office. For instance, the booklet says:— • "The State is anxious to encourage suitable British foil: to stake a claim in this fertile land of success and sunshine. On its.-fifty million acres of suitable Jand New Zealand should be .able to carry a population of at least ten million people. "Assisted passages are available for suitable people of the Homeland seeking occupation in New Zealand, and the Goveniiifeiit finances their 12,000 mile .■journey by providing passages ranging from £s'los to £16 10s per he-ad." This gonoral statement printed in 19l!G seems hardly suitable for the present time when so few assisted migrants are- going out to the nonunion and so many applications for those passages have to be refused.'
