THOUSAND, MILES RACE

ITALIAN EOAD EVENT One hundred cars took part in Italy's thousand miles road race, an event only made possible by perfect, organistaion and the use of troops to guard the whole of the highway. The race was won by Campari and Eamponi, driving a supercharged 1500 c.c. machine, with which they covered the thousand miles in 19 hrs 14min 5 4-ssec, thus maintaining an average of 52J. miles an hour,.four miles an hour faster than last year. A 2000 ex. machine, driven by Mazzotti and Rosa, finished second, eight minutes behind the winner. ■ The competing cars wore divided into five classes, according to engine size, the smallest boing limited to 1100 c.c. In this division the'-first place was won by a car driven by Gilera and Manenti in 93hrs 59min 5 l-ssec,- an averago of 42 miles an hour. Stscting at Brescia, the competitors ran through Bologna, crossed tho Aperi--nine Mountains to Florence, checked in at Borne, then again crossed the Apennines through Perugia to Ancona on the Adriatic. They then ran up to Bologna, passed through Ferrara and Troviso, anil flashed over the Venetian plains through Yiceuza and Verona to the terminus point at Brescia. The race was a most sovero test of both cars and men by reason of the mountainous region to be passed' through, and the fact that a whole night haa to he spent on the road. Although few of tho roads were dustless, the race took place without a single accident of any Itnid. •
