GROWTH OF THE. GUILD ■>' GOOD PROGRESS REPORTED ' The" annual 'conference""of "the Now Zealand 'Bank.Officers' Guild was hold in Wellington during tho past week.. The report stated that tho guild membership had continued to show steady growth, being now 2523' as compared with 2370 a year ago. A comparison) between present-day conditions and those of 1919, when the guild was estab-
lished, rovoaled a. great improvement. Decided benefits, had been:secured for tho staffs, .and these.had largely contributed to tho-higher, status reached by tho profession and tho favour it .now enjoyed in the. estimation of the community. Tho cash income'of the Guild Investment Society, Ltd.; now exceeded £12,000 per annum. Up to tho present time, 46 officers had, gained the diploma in banking. Members had been invited to submit suggestions for a motto and badge. The special, committee appointed had chosen tho words "Auxilio.et Consiji" (by help and counsel), submitted by Miss E.M. Fairlio, Union Bank of Australia', Gigborne. The income for the past year ' amounted to j£ 1609 6s lldy and tho expenditure was £1347 3s 7d. leaving: a surplus of £2G2 3s 4d. With the addition of this amount the accumulated fund-now stood at £1889.165.1 id. -..-■ The-annual conference smoke concert was held on Thursday. Mr. E. A. Dixon (president) was in the chair. Speaking to the toast of "The Guild," the Hon. R.. A. Wright '(Minister of -Education) said that:if they.could only engender in the minds of all other employees tho same spirit of; sweet reasonableness which existed between the banks and their staffs,.the country would be in a much better position to-day. - . In proposing tho toast of "Th© Banks," the president referred to the improvement in the last few years'in the conditions under.which they worked. Responding to .tho. toast, Mr. G. W. M'lnto.sb (chairman of the Associated Banks) said that during the last seven years.£9oß2 had been paid out by the banks for tho university and coaching fees of their staffs. Mr. T- B. Heffer, assisantlnspector. Bank of New South Wales, also , responded. Short addresses were given by Messrs. A. G. Henderson (Bank of Now Zealand), H. P. Mourant (general secretary of the guild), B. A. Moore (Bank of New Zealand),. :A. .Burgess (president of the Public Service Association), and J. Schofield (Bank of" Now South Wales, Christchurch). •
