A STORMY VOYAGE
90 HOURS ■■OVERDUE Ninety hours overdue on a voyage from Auckland to Wellington, a trip scheduled to take 52 hours, the.Canadian Challenger arrived in the stream shortly after 8 o'clock this morning, having left Auckland port .at -'7 o'clock on Sunday morning. The ship had discharged a considerable amount of her cargo at Auckland, and consequently came in for a severe tossing when she encountered the heavy seas v From Auckland to Castlepoint the weather was fair, and good progress was made; but early on Tuesday morn-, ing a heavy southerly sprang. up, and rapidly increased in strength, until it was deemed advisable to heave to. There, was little, sleep, for auy of the officers, as all through Tuesday .arid ■ up till Wednesday night the. ship strained at her anchors, and the waves assumed mountainous proportions at times. The wind never showed signs of abating, and occasionally reached hurricane force. Squaljs of hail and raiu rendered the conditions still more uncomfortable. Wednesday.evening was marked, by a slight improvement. in. the '.weather, and the ship got under way once more, but had proceeded no further than Cape Palliser when the gale ..again; sprang up as fierce as ever. Thursday morning found her once more hove to under conditions that were a. repetition of those experienced off Castlepoint. Yesterday afternoon an improvement began, and she was able to complete her long and unpleasant voyago, last night. Although a number of se9s;W.ere shipped the Canadian. ;Challenger. ; was undamaged. .•,'-■.: --___£.^____/__^__ ,-■. ' ■
