ROAD MAINTENANCE
METHOD OF TAXATION, (By Telegraph.—Presa Association.) ' HAMILTON, 21st Juno. Kesolving that the cost of maintenance of rural roads should be provided by the motor fuel tax without recourse to rates, the Auckland Eural Counties Association decided to urge the Government to immediately adopt this system, in respect of main highways and gradually apply the same to all" rural roads. The conference also resolved that all arterial main highways should be nationalised; that for the purpose of preserving the surface of roads, including main highways, the conference is of opinion that statutory power should bo given to county councils to make bylaws restricting the speed of motor vehicles; that the present method of providing for hospital sand charitable aid by means of a'rate on land is obsolete and inequitable, and urges the adoption of a system conforming to the principles of raising revenue for general purposes; also that the cost of charitable aid unemployment relief should be met wholly by the Government, but the funds be distributed by hospital boards, as at present.
