"MADAME POMPADOUR."

There was a very , largo demand for scats at The Bristol yesterday morning when the box plans were opened for the first production lierc of the comic opera, "Madamo1 Pompadour," which is to bo staged for tho first time on Thursday night next at tho Grand Opera House. It is said that Miss.-Bennie.de Vries, who will make her first appearance hero as "Madame Pompadour," has that rare asset, a charming personality, to which Is added grace of movement and eloquence of gesture, and it is stated she presonts the historic character of La Pompadour with great distinction. Miss de Yries's voice is heard in the beautiful music allotted to the role she takes. Besides acting the role of the lover, Mr. Frank Webster's tenor voice is given great opportunities to distinguish itself in the solo, "Carnival Time," and in the duets with Miss de Vrles, "By tho Light of the Meon," "Love's Sentry," and "Reminiscence." "Madame Pompadour" is said to be full of colour and melody. It has a genuine strain of humour, for which the popular comedian, Arthur Stigant, as the derelict poet, is largely responsible. To add to its other merits, the piece has a plot that would do credit to romantic drama. There arc three richly coloured scenes, tho first laid outside a picturesque Paris tavern of the seventeenth century, the next in Pompadour's apartments, and tho tliird in King Louis's palace at . Versailles.
