The career of-this remarkable firm is unique in the annals of local manufacture. The. year 1876 saw Donaghy.'s in a small way, with "Quality" their motto,' laying the foundations of what to-day is the largest rope and twine manufacturing business in the Southern Hemisphere. When the first reaper and binder, arrived in the - Dominion this firm had the machinery already installed to spin binder twine, and their '' Gold Medal " and "Eclipse" brands are'today a byword amongst farmers from the North Cape, to the Bluff. If you get many more yards to the pound of binder twine at.the same price,, and a stronger twine, then you tie more sheaves at the same cost. That is. what happens when farmers use "Eclipse" binder twine. ■:' Ropes" in all sizes from _-inch to 2_ inches, made from fibres imported from 'India, Ceylon, Russia, Italy, Java, and -Philippine ■ Islands, also from Pho'rmium Tenax (New Zealand flax), - a-fibre well known to New Zealanders,-are manufactured; at', the Company's .yvast ■ .works at, Auckland,. Dunedin, and.Live!'cargilL No expense .has been spared to bring their factories up to the highest point of efficiency, and the articles produced are equal in every way to anything imported into the Dominion, but are'sold at a lower cost. The" latest addition is a special department which deals solely with tho inftnufacturo of shop twines. Twines I aro "manufactured in ' all qualities and [.numbers from' cotton, jute, and the various hemps, and in this new departure the firm'has maintained the high standard of quality that has for years been manifest in their manufactures. Imagine a plant which receives -raw materials from the. world's markets'to be manufactured into the necessary commercial articles, where a staff of hundreds are" kept continually busy executing orders for eVery possible variety of ropes, lines, and twines, and then coasider the part that such industry must play in the national prosperity; ', ■;. ,- .
