CONVICTED FOR THEFT

Albert Stanley Gillespie, aged _24, who, according to , Chief-Detective Ward, has been "swagging" abc-ut the country for the past eight or. nine years, was before tho Magistrate's Court today charged with the theft at Otaki of £2 10s belonging to George- Cooksley. "Gillespie admitted the offence. On Sunday, said ■ Chief-Detective Ward,' Gillespie, who was swagging about Woodville, was given a ride on a motor-lorry to'Otaki. lie wandered round Otaki looking for a meal, and finally went to the back of a butcher's shop. He pushed the door open and stole- £2 10s from the shop. Tho accused then came to, Wellington, and was arrested yesterday, when he had in his possession £1, Is. of the stolen money. Gillespie /had been before the Court in '^September, 1924, •'■ on a' charge of being idle and disorderly. •.'■'.-,.• Tho -Probation -Officer - (Mr.- T. P. I Mills) thought that something might be done for the accused if-he was given probation. ' Tho Magistrate (Mr. E.Page, S.M.) convicted Gillespie, and. ordered him to come up for seritence if cailod upon within twelve months. He was' orderI ed to repay the money.
