EFFECT OF A PREFIX
The effect of the use of the prefixes "do" and "re" when applie to tho word "grade" in reference to export apples was considered by the Fruit Growers' Conference to-day. A Nelson delegate objected to the Agriculture Department labelling fruit 'degraded" when it was found necessary to grade "exta fancy" as "fancy," for instance, tie complained against tho stigma the word conveyed, and suggested that it should bo labelled "regraded." Mr. T. C. Brash pointed out the difficulty that .irose, as lVuit bad t j be labelled before it was graded. In the dairy industry there was only one grade, "fit for export." Mr. J. A. Campbell (Director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture) agreed that there might be :i stigma, but asked what other world could be used? To use the word "regraded'' would imply" that the fruit had boon taken out and graded at a later date. There might 'bo an effect on prices wlicre fruit was sold at auction, the degraded fruit Slaving a slightly better colour, but that need not be the case where fruit was sold by private treaty. The conference decided lo request the Department to consider the advisability of making an alteration in the stamp used for fruit where the grade had been reduced.
