COOKS TO RESUME

AT OWNEKS' TERMS ATTITUDE OF OTHER UNIONS United Press Association—By Electric Tele- | graph—Copyright. Australian Press Association. (Received 15th June, 10 a.m.) • SYDNEY, This Day. The cooks' strike has ended, the men agreeing to the shipowners' terms. Under the arrangement the owners hereafter' have an entirely free hand in the selection of the men for the galleys, either through the union, at the ship's side, or at the shipping offices. Every assistance must be given by union officials in the selection of the galley staffs, and, subject to the union giving an undertaking to this effect, the shipowners will raise no objection to the union keeping a list at its office showing the.. dates of unemployment registration in order to facilitate priority of selection. The shipowners are prepared under these terms to re-engage members of the union on the terms of the suspended award. The cooks' strike has lasted for fifteen weeks. Mr. Tudehope, announcing the settlement, said that the decision was greatly influenced by the extraordinarylattitude adopted by the other unions. He indicated that the men were ready for an immediate' resumption. The cooks' decision was reached at a mass meeting held simultaneously with a meeting of the transport group. The cooks discussed the offer of the owners that the cooks should man the ships on the terms of the award, and finality was eventually reached. The difficulty of the roster system was met by the owners with a suggestion that a list of unemployed cooks should be submitted to the ■ owners, and the latter should engage the men in rotation, subject to the men being suitable. Mr. J. S. Garden, at the meeting of the Maritime Transport group, announced the cooks' decision, which was received with cheers and groans. Mr.. Garden immediately telegraphed to Mr. Appleton, chairman of the Commonwealth steamship owners, adding that the men would be ready to report for duty to-day. ■ ■ : ' It is expected that some weeks will elapse before the vessels return to their normal running.
