Thistle, Diamond, and Hutt were eliminated in the first round o£ the Chatham Cup competition, played on Saturday, victories being registered by Petone, V.M.C.A., and Marist, who, with Hospital, will fight out the second round. The principal attraction was the meeting between V.M.C.A. and Diamond on No. 1 ground at the Basin Reserve, and although uot a-brilliant exhibition of Soccer, it provided over 2000 spectators with an interesting afternoon's entertainment. lhere was very little between the teams in the actual run of the play, but V.M.C.A. s solid defence once again stood them m good stead. At full-time the score was l eve l_two goals apiece—but 111 extra time YMCA. scored the goal necessary to crive them the victory. Petone proved too good for Thistle ou the Fctone Kecreation Ground, and finished up winners with three goals to. spare. Ihistle threw away several opportunities ot scoring. Marist had no great difficulty in accounting for Hutt by. three goals to oue. In the senior B grade,' Waterside, the championship leaders, narrowly averted defeat by Brooklyn.
