» (From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, Sth June. The annual. meeting of the Nelson Licensing Committee was held to-day. There were present: Mr. T. E. Maunscll, S.M. (chairman), Messrs. 11. Saunders, J. Bartlett, "W. D. Jlarkness, J. Stringer, and T. Pettit. Except where it was desired that certain renovations be carried out in a few cases, the police report was favourable. At last night's committee meeting of tho City Council it was decided that the question of a free compulsory rubbish service be deferred to enable further information to bo obtained from other towns as to methods adopted. The ordinary session of the Supremo Court will commence in Nelson on Tuesday next, when Mr. Justice Smith will be on the Bench. This will be his first visit to Nelson in his official capacity. There is a longer list than usual, there being three criminal cases, four civil, four in divorce, and three motions for discharge from bankruptcy. The Rev. ]?. O. Lawrence, assistant curate at Nelson Cathedral, is leaving Nelson early next month for' Timaru, where he has accepted an appointment as senior curate. _ Mr. Lawrence was ordained in Nelson five years ago, and has taken an active interest not only in church work but also in matters of general interest. His departure will be regretted by the many friends he has made. In the Bible-in-sehools movement and in connection with tho K.S.A. he has taken particular interest. At the last meeting of the Collingwood County Council Mr. A. 11. I'letcher (chairman) took the opportunity of welcoming Jlv. G. O. Ellis, who had just taken up his duties as county clerk. Last, night the City Council took strong exception to the attitude of the Main Highways Board in proposing to treat the works on the Wanyainoa Ilill as v relief one. Alter considerable discussion it was resolved that the board be informed that the council is not prepared to contribute (.C750 was the City Council contribution) towards the work if it. is to be treated as a relief one, but it will ha prepared to ilo so if carried out on a system of co-opera-tion where the workmen will be able to earn pay at award rates. It was suggested to interview the Minister of I'nblii: Works on the matter. The Minister arrives tonight. The management committee uf the Nelson Football Association last night decided to arrange dates for matches in Nelson with the Millerton and Johnsonville clubs. It was also decided that Nelson should challenge Buller for the Peter Dawson Cup. The Thistle Club was granted permission to play Piiponga at Nelson on 21st July.
