SHIPS TO BE MANNED

LABOUR CALL ON MONDAY DISASTROUS CONFLICT FEARED MELBOURNE, Sth Juno. A special meeting of the Commonwealth Steamship Owners' Association decdied to call for labour to man all idle ships on Monday next. No distinction will be made between union and nonunion labour when crews arc engaged. This decision supersedes the owners' intention to man the ships in the Tnsmnuiiin service without cooks. Volunteers .will be offered terms in accordance with existing conditions and awards. Union officials admit that there are several hundred sailors and firemen who are prepared to accept any work offering, and they fear that the distress caused By the prolonged iincinploj'mcnt will tempt SO per cent, of the idle members of the maritime unions to volunteer. The waterside workers will meet tomorrow to decide whether they will handle cargo for vessels manned by non-union labour. A disastrous conflict, involving all the

maritime unions and transport group of unions, is feared.
