"CAPPING DAY"

♦ ! GRADUATES OF THE YEAR COLLEGE FUNCTION CONGRATULATIONS ~~~ In the absence of an official ceremony this year for the presentation of the diplomas to the graduates, tho students of Victoria University College orgahisnised a congratulatory function on similar lines to vho capping ceremony of former years. This was held at the Town Hall last evening prior to the students' ball. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) presided, and associated with him on the platform were the Minister of Defence (the Hon. P. J. BVlleston), and Mr. G. G. G. Watson, representing the past students of the college. The undergraduates were much in evidence at the back of the hall, but the speakers were given . good hearing, being interrupted infrequently The Mayor congratulated the students upon undertaking tho responsibility of carryin out the annual graduation function themselves, and ou behalf of the city welcomed the graduates of the year. Wellington, he said, was proud of its Victoria College. In conclusion, Mr. Troup referred to the five evidences of education given by Dr. Butler: precision in the use of the mother tongue; refined manner and behaviour; the power and habit of reflection; the power of growth; and efficiency—tho power to do things. The Hon. j?. J. Rollcston expressed pleasure at being asked, as a graduate of the sister college of Canterbury, to speak to his fellow-graduates. He spoke of his associations at Canterbury College, including Sir Ernest Rutherford, the great authority on radium, and Sir William Harris, who had made his mark in the Government of India and in literature. Referring to college life, Mr. Eolleston said that before one could specialise in any subject, it was necessary to have- a foundation of a broad and liberal education, but later a desire was developed for something outside one's ordinary occupation. He also stressed the importance of the study of tho dead languages, which made for sane and accurate thought. Ho concluded by again congratulating the successful students. Mr. Watson extended to the graduates the hearty congratulations of the Students'. Association, and said that tho real benefit of university life was derived from the. social and sporting activities of the institution, and participation in the building,up of a university tradition. It was gratifying that through the munificence of the late Mr. Wheeler, the college would soon have residential quarters attached to it. On behalf of the old students, he urged the present students to take their full share in the sporting and social life or! the college and give tho lie to tho taunt that it 'was merely a night school; and when they left the college to keep in touch with it as much as possible.
