THE CURFEW BELL
Kinging the Curfew Bell did not always mean for folks to get off the streets and go to bed. It really started as a linn alarm (states an exchange). It was also the signal for tlic closing of all shops. In an English college town it was the signal lor closing the college gates. In Yorkshire it meant for the farmers to lock up the cattle i'or tlie night. In some places Ilici'O was a " curfew/ where (lie bell rang sit. 4- o'clock to awaken" the farmers. Tlio origin of the word curfew is "jiouvrc feu," cover fire- (iVeneh).
