ESSAYS QN BIRDS

The New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society offered prizes last year for the best essays on native birds written by primary school children. The competition attracted entries from all over New Zealand, and even from the Chatham Islands* Two Bistera from. Martinborough, Joan and Annie Berry, proved to be the winners, Joan's on. "Bedbills" securing first prize and Annie's on "Black-backed Gulls" second. r ' ' The first prize is £5 and three years* membership to the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society, and the secondprize "The Animals of New Zealand,"___ by Hutton and Drummond. Another essay which rah very close to tho two first was "The Fantail," by Thelma Deighton, Tarurutangi School, New Plymouth, who was awarded a conf solation prize.
